School Information
Guillemont Junior School opened in 1976. Architects from the Department of Education and Science in conjunction with Hampshire Education Authority designed it as a ‘building design project’ school. As a consequence, the school accommodation is excellent. The class areas are designed specifically to allow for flexibility in their arrangement, with some open areas and some classrooms. There are also separate facilities for physical education, music, drama and clay / DT work. The library is situated in the heart of the school and has excellent associated study areas. At midday these study areas provide a comfortable and pleasant setting for lunch, an occasion that we consider to be important in the school day. This area was totally refurbished in October 2003.
The school stands in a five-acre site, and the development of the outside environment has been a continuous focus. It provides for safe, varied and stimulating work opportunities as well as space for play. We have recently built a Japanese Courtyard Garden with sponsorship from NEC Technologies (UK) Ltd.
The school is organised into twelve classes: six parallel classes of vertically grouped Year 3 / Year 4 children and six parallel classes of vertically grouped Year 5 / Year 6 children. The current number on roll is 330. Twenty of the children have access to specialist provision for language impairment with two additional teachers and six LSAs. Language Unit children also integrate into some mainstream classes with additional support on a part time basis.
The school has 17 teachers (12 class teachers, 2 Language Unit teachers and some teachers who cover PPA and have no permanent class responsibility). In addition, Learning Support Assistants are linked to each class.
The children are enthusiastic, well motivated and their independence is fostered. Standards achieved are equal to or above the National Average in all core subjects. Practical, first hand work is a real focus of the curriculum. A very successful OFSTED Inspection was achieved in June 2008. In May 2005 we were awarded the NAACE Mark for our outstanding work in ICT; the ICT Quality Mark followed in October 2005 and was successfully re-assessed in March 2008. We have an enhanced Healthy Schools Award (2008)
The school has an on-site, purpose-built Workplace Nursery for children 4 months to 5 years.
We also run an Out of School Club child care facility.
