Sustainability & Active Travel

Climate Action Plan:

At Guillemont Junior School, we believe that small actions can lead to big changes, and we’re excited to take steps toward a greener, more sustainable future. Our Climate Action Plan is all about creating a positive impact on the environment while inspiring our students, staff, and families to work together for a cleaner, healthier world.

From reducing waste to saving energy, we are committed to making eco-friendly choices that will benefit not only our school but the community around us. By embracing these efforts, we hope to encourage everyone at Guillemont Junior School to become climate champions and help build a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow.

Guillemont Junior School actively encourages our pupils and staff to walk, scoot or cycle to school as it keeps us fit and healthy; it helps our pupils develop road safety skills; it helps keep our local air clean; and keeps our streets free from congestion.

Our team of Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) organise a number of engaging and informative activities throughout the year. Let’s meet the team!

We are taking part in the Modeshift STARS scheme which recognises schools for showing excellence in supporting walking, cycling and other forms of active and sustainable travel.  We were awarded our Silver Accreditation in July 2025.

Getting to School

Walking Zones Map

We have created this simple Walking Zones map so you can see how long it takes to walk to school from where you live.  If you live within the 10- or 15-minutes walking zones, you may even find it’s quicker to walk to school than drive and find a parking space.

Throughout the week, the children explored the health benefits of active travel, investigated how ‘Safe Vehicles Save Lives’ and took part in ‘Be Bright, Be Seen’ day!

Pupils in Year 6 completed their Bikeability training program, supporting them to develop the practical skills to cycle safely and confidently on today’s roads.

During ‘Road Safety Week’ we were teaching our children to be safe near roads, particularly during the autumn and winter when it is best to bright and florescent clothing.

Our JRSOs came up with a catchy slogan to remind people to park safely and responsibly around our school.

The children were invited to decorate their bikes to bring into school and for the chance to win a prize.  There were some fabulous entries; it was difficult to choose our year group winners! Throughout the week, the children also learnt key information about cycle and helmet safety.

Walk to School Week

Throughout the week, all children were encouraged to walk or ‘park and stride’ to school, to promote active and sustainable travel.  The JRSOs also hosted a competition to add to the excitement of the week.  Well done to everyone who took part and received their certificate and/or prize!

Parkwise

In February 2024, our Junior Road Safety Officers were joined by Rachel Hazell and Cllr Allen for our Travel Watch, to help launch our parent ‘Parkwise’ campaign. Information and stickers were handed out to raise awareness of safe and responsible parking around the school.

In November, our Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSOs) hosted a ‘Your Time to Shine’ day, to highlight the importance of being visible when walking to and from school, particularly during the autumn and winter.  All of the children were encouraged to ‘be bright to be seen’ by dressing as brightly as possible!
