In Years 3 and 4 we use Read, Write Inc. Phonics as our phonics scheme and then in Years 5 and 6 we use Read, Write Inc. Fresh Start which is designed for older, developing readers. Reading is a fundamental skill and the programmes are tailored to meet the needs of all children in order for them to learn to read quickly and to close any gaps that they may have.
To best support your child when they are learning to read, we suggest that you read their Book Bag Book or Fresh Start anthology 5 times across the week. Spending 10 minutes a day reading with your child will hugely support them in their journey to becoming an independent reader.
Re-reading words and sentences that can be decoded (sounded out) is a key part of your child’s learning and will help them become fluent readers (read with ease and precision). By reading texts several times, children have the greatest opportunity to achieve this fluency.
We teach the children through sets of sounds and matching rhymes which help with memory retention (see below for the full list). Starting with Set 1 and moving on to Sets 2 and 3, the children develop an increasing range of sounds that help them decode more complicated words. There are a number of videos below which you can watch with your child as they learn each new sound or if they struggle with one in particular.
4. Read to them.
Another key way to support your child is to read to them! Share exciting and engaging books and stories with them because it will open up their world and expose them to lots of new vocabulary, emotions, knowledge and a love of reading.
