Physical Education (PE)

Intent

Across the Guillemont Junior and Pinewood School Federation, our Intent is to nurture a lifelong love of physical activity by developing physically literate individuals who possess the skills, confidence, and internal motivation to lead healthy lives. Fuelled by curiosity, our inclusive and challenging curriculum explicitly cultivates essential life skills including communication, collaboration, creativity, and healthy competition, while instilling core values like fairness, equality, respect, and perseverance. We purposefully design our physical offer to break down barriers to sports participation through innovative on site swimming provision, foster student leadership that builds character, and provide real world independence and safety skills. By partnering with local secondary education, we ease transitions and raise pupil aspiration, ensuring every child, regardless of their starting point, is empowered to set personal challenges, experience diverse recreational or competitive pathways, and achieve their personal best.

Implementation:

We implement this vision through a balanced weekly curriculum of invasion games, gymnastics, dance, athletics, and outdoor adventurous activities, driven by a unique Three Learning Objective framework based on understanding, explaining, and performing. Enrichment and student leadership are deeply woven into daily school life through Year 6 Playtime Leaders organizing daily lunch games, student run Friday lunchtime clubs, and a unique student led unicycle training programme. Practical life skills are prioritized through Bikeability training for Year 6 alongside our innovative on-site portable swimming pool, which delivers targeted lessons for Year 5, crucial Year 6 catch up, and early intervention Year 2 pupils from Pinewood. Furthermore, collaborations with Cove Secondary School elite sports leaders enhance Year 6 PE lessons and our annual Sports Day, while Oak Academy digital resources, teacher led after school dance and netball clubs, and CM Sport competitive football pathways provide diverse learning routes underpinned by robust, continuous assessment tracking.

Impact:

The impact of our curriculum is seen in graduates who leave our federation fully physically literate, demonstrating great resilience, and exceptionally well prepared to confidently access the Key Stage 3 PE curriculum. Through our robust Year 6 leadership roles, including the organization of playground games and specialized unicycle training, and partnerships with secondary schools, pupils develop tangible communication, mentoring, and organization skills, resulting in a vibrant, active, and respectful playground culture. Our specialized safety initiatives ensure Year 6 pupils gain vital real world road awareness and independence through Bikeability, while our on site pool project achieves high rates of swimming proficiency and water safety across multiple year groups. Guided by external fixtures with CM Sport and our diverse extra curricular clubs, our children embrace healthy competition with excellent sportsmanship, leaving the school with a genuine enthusiasm for staying active and the self belief to pursue a healthy, collaborative lifestyle.
